Netflix with ads arrives: What you need to know

Netflix has launched a new Basic Plan from €5.49 per month. This plan was released in Spain on November 10th and it’s available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the US. The current advert-free plans (Basic, Standard and Premium) are still accessible.

What’s new?

  • It’s a cheaper plan but NOT FREE: from €5.49 per month
  • Adverts are included, due to a partnership with Microsoft.
  • Video quality up to 720p/HD
  • A limited number of films and TV series aren’t available.

How does it work, according to Netflix?

  • Average of 4 to 5 minutes (15 or 30 seconds) of adverts per hour, before and during series and films.
  • No ability to download titles to watch them offline.
  • No possibility to play content on simultaneous devices.
  • It’s not available on the Windows PC app and on mobile devices lower than iOS 15 or Android 7.
  • Extensive country and gender targeting options for advertisers.
  • Verification tools: partnerships with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to verify the viewability and traffic validity of the adverts starting in Q1 2023.

But… how is the real experience?

  • If you are watching a 2 hours movie, it will be reproduced a total of 8 minutes of ads, divided into several breaks.
  • If you are watching an episode between 40 minutes and 1 hour, it will be reproduced 4 minutes of ads.
  • Each ad break lasts between 60-80 seconds.
  • There are many series “locked”, such us: House of Cards, Downton Abbey, Vikings, The Office, Brooklyn Nine-Nine or Arrested Development.
